Peter Buchanan-Smith and the Urban Ax

The following year, Peter Buchanan-Smith began selling boards, his dog died, he and his wife separated and sold the house thought it would grow old in a large loss. In addition, he separated his business partner.
This does not mean cause and effect. Or, to say that Mr. Buchanan-Smith, a graphic designer who has advised Isaac Mizrahi and Philip Glass, a redesigned two icons – and magazine paper, with Maira Kalman, Strunk & White “Elements of Style” – and won a Grammy for the album cover made for your favorite band, Wilco, in any way by luck. Axis, you see, have done very well.

Powered by a secret spring in Maine, and hand painted Mr. Buchanan-Smith, 38, in his studio in Tribeca (with the help of two interns art school and full-time employees), solid axles and beautiful went viral.

After Andy Spade, Brander, a businessman and husband of Kate Spade, enter one of the Partners & Spade, his quasi-gallery, in May 2009, design and media design bloggers trumpeted “authenticity” of this instrument, manly – and then was promoted largely as a work of art. This was irritating and comfortable for Mr. Buchanan-Smith, who says he is always worrying that it will be perceived as “just a few kicks from hipster chic design is old school to sell some tools for a myriad of other hipsters.

However, seven of its axles to hang in the Saatchi Gallery in London. Seth Godin, entrepreneur and marketing guru, has one, and so are Leonard Lauder, David Lynch and Mike Jones, president of MySpace.

Also true woodsmen-wife bought them, as you can see from the photos and comments about Mr. Buchanan-Smith has a new Web site, Bestmadeco.com that is designed to be as a community center for the sporty as he also online emporium. (Mr. Buchanan-Smith, who grew up on a farm in Ontario, New York has a pre-New, a biography of Hemingway-like experience, including work planting trees in northern Ontario, the artificial insemination of sows Scotland and came “so close” to reach the British army.)

A late morning last winter, the bartender girl City Cafe on Thompson Street, which is machine clouded Mr. Buchanan-Smith stunned his client, saying: “You’re the man hatchet!” Barista, which saw Mr. Buchanan-Smith photos on New York magazine, then up a payment plan to buy one. (Top of OSI for $ 180)

And so it happened that at the end of last month, after a flurry of shopping Father’s Day – with his wife in a panic and daughter to buy an ax last minute – and the wild morning on the Gilt Groupe, an online sites online private sale, during which 100 axes were acquired in an hour, Mr. Buchanan-Smith made were all sold.

“Not that we have money,” he said. “We only break even.”

But he has obviously touched a nerve. In a time when the entire neighborhood (as Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and Outer Mission of San Francisco) are remodeled by young entrepreneurs selling limited edition handmade products such as cheeses made by hand, or exhumation of a time, like bulbs Edison, teaching or equal to butcher a deer bagged during the weekend – that is, selling products and skills that are returning to pre-megabrand, pre-globalization world – someone like Mr. Buchanan-Smith can become mini-stars has become a reseller designer, Martha Stewart for this millennium.

And as satisfaction for the “faith” is nearly laughable level design community, with young bloggers to create an endless catalog of “authentic” items such as denim or Marvingt chairs is not difficult to see how a simple hand-axes and All That implies (knowledge of wood craft, or the ability of a split log or pitch a tent), to find a market willing.

Paola Antonelli, curator of architecture and design at the Museum of Modern Art (and former teacher, Mr. Buchanan-Smith at the School of Fine Arts), described on its axis as the “ultimate antidote to life in high broadband Lane.

He added: “Tools, especially the artisan care, are irresistible, and not something just for kids’. If the hardware catalogs are enough to make us swoon, imagine a collection of perfectly crafted axis. Sparano an electric shock to the right in the very archipallium. (For those of you who can not quickly find this last word, archipallium is the oldest part of the brain).

In any case, Mr. Buchanan-Smith is happily down the rabbit hole of new business and life. It was settled in 500 square meters apartment in Greenwich Village (rent: $ 2,600), with a few choice possessions: the last of his dog take a stick before putting down the pipe did when he was 12 and mess around in father’s shop at his farm in Ontario, and grandfather in the family tartan kilt.

And there are new products: ladders rope, ice pick pocket, toolbox and superb leather belt that looks like a backpack, but the number is only ax field Mr. Buchanan-Smith.

I would work with the Canadian company to sell its southwest, rain hat-tarpaulin. He became fascinated by the work of two artists in Brooklyn, Gabriel Cohen and Lordship Jolie Mae, which collect the feathers of tropical birds from aviaries and have arrows on them. It ‘was commissioned a designer he met at art field in Minnesota to collect the best cards stamped Made Co., a symbol, the Red Cross.
