What is Twitter? (A chat)?

I have herd many celebrities are using Twitter. (Nk P!, Kristen Stewart, Nikki Reed) is it open to normal people? and did you pay? Why stars like so much? What do you do that? Is it like myspace with updates page and music and all that? or facebook or something entirely different? Thank you.

You do not have to pay, and is open to all. Twitter is a service where you can update what you do at any time of day, and follow the people you want so you can see what they do during the day. No, not a chat room. You can add a background of your choice, but you can not get all fancy as you can on Myspace.
