What is one of the best percussion universities that are pretty easy to get into?
Okay. My family says that I’m pretty beastly at being a percussionist and I really want to have a major in musical contents or stuff like that. So I was just wondering what is an absolutely great university that have a good marching band and that are pretty easy to get into. Thank you.
OK – first, of all, BERKLEE is in BOSTON – and is hardly the only good music school out there. And you have asked at cross-purposes – you want something *absolutely great* and yet *pretty easy to get into*. Not gonna happen. Many fine music schools are professionally-oriented – and do not have a marching band program. Those that DO are part of large universities. If you are a music major, you often do no have TIME to be in marching band – unless you are a music EDUCATION major, and it is a requirement. NONE of these are going to be *pretty easy to get into*. They all want a good GPA, and a fabulous audition. You family might love you, and praise you, but unless they are professionals in the music business, their opinions are worthless. Start doing some research – if marching is at the top of your list, then look at big universities that also have a SCHOOL of music – not just a department of music. There are some up north, like Boston University, but the further south you go in the US, the easier they are to find. My son went to Temple in Philly – that would work for you. Look at all the monster state schools, like Penn State. However, realize that the competition to get IN is huge You should be studying privately RIGHT NOW with the BEST private teacher you can find – someone with degree sin music, and certified as a teacher, not the local stoner rock drummer at the local music store. You grade in school mus t be VERY high – NO, they do not take *great talent* as excuse for a rotten average. You have a LOT of work to do – so get going. I wish you luck.
